Don’t Fight The Wind
By Diane on Jun 4, 2010 in Wisdom From the Wind
Some of you may already know, and some of you may not know that I am a biker.
I love to ride with my husband on our Harley Davidson. Many people have encouraged
me to ride my own motorcycle. I simply have little interest in driving. From the back
seat of our Haritage Classic, I find some of the best inspiration.
Last night, as we were riding with some friends of ours, I noticed that my husbands hair,
which is quite long, was not braided. It started to come out of his shirt and slap me in
the face. This stings really bad. So I decided to braid it as we were going down the road.
Thinking that I may not be very successful at getting the job done, I decided to try anyway.
I discovered something as sort of an awakening.
If you don’t fight the wind and you just go with it, the wind can actually help you
to accomplish your task.
I started thinking about how I have planned, sceamed, and tried to manipulate my own
life by doing what every well respected, highly educated person told me. Going here,
going there, associating with the right people, joining the next great opportunity, investing
in business and ideas, only to fail at nearly everything I tried to do. I have spent years
searching for the best thing to do to make money. Guess what… I never found it.
This may seem a suprise to most people, but most people never really think about
what makes them happy. Infact, some people don’t even know what makes them happy.
Think about it…Even as a child, you were told what you can and can’t do.
You went to school and you either loved it or you hated it. If you hated it
you had to stay at it until you graduated because that is what “every” successful person does.
(not true by the way. I am not suggesting that anyone quit school, I am simply saying
there are other ways to be educated.) After highschool, you were told you had to go to
college. If you hated school to start with, what makes anyone think you want to further
tourture yourself by going to college. Our government sets most of our standards of how
we should act, live, educate and believe it or not, how much money we make and what
kind of jobs we will work. Ok, so you go to school, then college, then you get a job.
Sometimes after 4 years of college you find that what you have studied for all this time,
that you hated studying for in the first place, isn’t what you really want to do for the rest
of your life. Believe me, after you get in this rut, it takes a lot to reprogram your mind to
be receptive to change. Most people just keep plugging along, doing what they are
supposed to do because, how crazy would it be to throw away years of schooling to do
something that makes you happy. This is why someone once said “Most people are dead at
the age of 25, it just takes 50 years to bury them. (I am not sure of the author of this quote).
Ok, back to the story on the motorcycle… As I was braiding my husbands hair going down
the road, I was struggling to get the hair to weave back and fourth because the wind was
blowing it in different directions. I started to study the direction the wind was blowing his
hair and I noticed a pattern. If I move one section to this side and another section to the
a different place, it was actually very easy to keep the hair from blowing everywhere. You
see, what I did was learn to work with the wind instead of against it. That gave me the
inspiration to write this down for everyone to read.
You see, there is an infinate universe out there to be explored. I am sure a lot of physicists
already know the actual theory of wind resistance, but it didn’t dawn on me until I experienced
it. Sometimes you can’t control the direction the wind is going to blow. Sometimes you can’t
control the direction your life cercumstances are taking you. Sometimes it is better to learn to
go with the flow of the wind instead of trying to fight it. I believe in a higher power than myself.
I personally call that higher power God. I believe that if you let go and let God, you will no longer
have to struggle with your own circumstances. Go with the wind instead of trying to resist it;
even if it seems a little out of the norm for you; even if others try to tell you it will never work.
Nothing great has ever been accomplished without others trying to spoil it. Don’t use that as an
excuse. If life hands you lemons, make lemonaid. If the wind blows to the north, go there also.
My dear friend Kimberly Bohannon gets it right in her 3 step process to finding your passion and
realizing your dream. She says to first go outside and take a deep, slow breath of fresh air and then
start walking your circle of influence. There are many things within your circle of influence… All of
which have been put there throughout your life. All of which you have let into your life.
All of the things you feel, good and bad, all of the things you have gone through, good and bad,
all of the things you have experienced, good and bad and all of the people you have let into your life,
good and bad, they all make up who you are and what your fears, limitations, and habits are, good and bad.
For me getting on that motorcycle is a way for me to walk my circle of influence.
From there I “CLEAN HOUSE”. I decide what I want to keep and what I want to throw away.
Sometimes this means shutting out life sucking relationships.
Sometimes this means realizing that the life you are living isn’t making you happy. When you start
to do this exercise, you will make room for new things, better things of your choosing. In step 3
Kimberly stresses to “Lose Control”, and let your guard down. If you refuse to let your hair down and
simply go with the flow of the wind, you will protect yourself from the bad stuff that could happen, but
you will also protect yourself from any of the good stuff that could happen as well.
Allow the answers to come to you. There is happiness in loving what you do and doing what you love.
The money is actually of little importance when you have happiness.
I guess that is where the phrase comes from that you can’t buy happiness.
So Go with the flow of the wind. The universe will show you the direction you are to go. Just like braiding
my husbands hair with the violent wind whipping it, if you simply let the wind do the work for you instead
of working against it, you will realize confort and control you never knew you had.
You will know what makes you tick, what gets you excited and identify your dream.
You will be building a whole new circle of influence and you will find the happiness.
